See where I went wrong, but what a coincidence that is 2 x William Bennett, both in RA, both in Coast Regts, both in Far East and their service numbers are almost identical

The 'Presumed drowned at Sea' on the Amersham gravestone is incorrect and is due to misinformation from the Japanese trying to cover up an attrocity. In fact Bdr Bennett was part of the notorious 'Gunners 600 Party'. He either died of disease, allied air attack or was murdered by the Japanese. It is possible he is buried at Bomana War Cemetery, New Guinea in one of the graves to 'Soldiers of the Royal Artillery Unidentified by Name' who came from the mass grave on Ballale Island.
