Bogus Job Offers: a Warning

I have been unemployed since last year. That explains why I very nearly fell completely for a fake job offer (desperation is the mother of gullibility). It was disguised as coming from a well known institution over here and even came under the name of an employee at said institution. I fell for it, lured by the name and the money quoted, and spent most of a week rushing around like a decapitated turkey doing the things they told me I needed to do to get working. I even bought an i phone, which I swore I would never do. I finally did what I should have done in the first place, namely check the institution's employment page. Lo and behold, it said that it didn't advertise on Assbook and that any ads seen there were fraudulent. Light dawned at last on my marble head before they could get hold of my bank account number and I'm grateful for that. But I wasted a week's time and spent money I didn't money to spend. I also got my hopes up and thought I had put unemployment behind me, only to find out that it was all false. Any road, I am posing this to warn any of you who might be out of work to CHECK all job offers and sources thereof. Never mind if it seems impolite of you, your sanity and your bank account are more important. If you don't exercise caution you may find yourself the victim of Quantum Bogodynamics, as I nearly was.

Very frustrating, glad you got away with only mild fuckery when it could have been worse by the sounds of it. Hopefully something genuine heads your way shortly as nobody deserves to be messed around like this.

Sorry to hear about that ordeal. I assume they told you that payroll needed your bank routing information for automatic deposit of your pay checks. That's a new twist. Clever scum.

Good luck in the employment search.

It was more convoluted than that, a little slicker. They sent me a check which had to be deposited to my account to "pay for equipment" needed for the job. When I deposited same, they said, I had to send them a copy of the deposit ticket as proof of deposit.

Hopefully when your handler's overlords find out he lost the prospect he'll be buried up to his neck in an anthill.

I'd guess that the next step would be that they tell you to purchase said equipment from a designated seller (really the scammer) by bank transfer and to deduct that from the check they sent you. Once check clearing is completed (can take quite a while in the US) you find that the check has bounced.

I'd prefer that another portion of his anatomy be exposed to the ants. That would be a still more painful death.

I fear that it is when you are at your most vulnerable you are at your most vulnerable. Well done for spotting the scam when you did - and good luck with job hunting.

This is the problem with opportunities posted Online. Gone are the days when employers published vacancies in newspapers or professional magazines. These could be considered as genuine.and publishers would take immediate action to remove the adverts if proved to be false.Online there is no such policemen.

No genuine employer would request financial details from a candidate before an interview and appointment. If personal presence is not to be then at least there should be a telephone conversation which would be interviewed based.

A website if given can at least be scrutinised for its authenticity.Even so, people are still taken in by UK bogus government websites which require a fee to access a service which would otherwise be free.

Caveat emptor as they say.....All that glitters is not gold.

Scammers depend on people having their logical guard down and being fully focussed on achieving what is their aim....pleased to see that TTH was suddenly aware that a scam was in progress and he would be the victim.

In the UK a search for vacancies can be made using one’s expertise as the searcher,it should throw up vacancies from agencies as appropriate to the expertise entered, to which would be added if the vacancy was permanent or temporary.I have never seen a dud employee advertising website reported from these recruiters.

Good luck THH in your quest for gainful employment.

Damn, Terry, I hate that for you but am glad you you saw through the smoke and mirrors before significant damage had been done.

What kind of work do you do?

You are in the US, right?

Mate, would that I could somehow damage their houses & poison their (doubtless unpleasant) pets.
Maximum bad vibes transmitted from here to all such slime.

Think you're quite right to tell everyone, too.
No shame in the slick bastards nearly getting you, & I think people might sometimes keep schtumm about these things, which quite possibly gives the twats a little more breathing room.

Yes, I'm in the States. I was office manager for a non profit for about five years, in medical research admin before that, teaching before that. All I want is something where I can sit around, do as little as possible, and watch the money roll in.

Tossers. Von P is right, though: there's no shame at all in not being scammed, of course. Good to put the warning out there, thanks. All the best in your search for a quiet desk and a gentle, yet powerful, money surge...

Just read a couple of news articles, one of which refers to Iranian fake job recruiters: Facebook removes 200 accounts run by Iranian hackers posing as job recruiters
Another mentions the money being extorted from Australian companies by scammers/hackers: Australian organisations are secretly paying hackers millions in a 'tsunami of cyber crime'

It really does pay to be circumspect at all times, recently I terminated a call from my bank when I realized that I had no way of knowing if they were who they said they were, especially as even though they rang me they asked all kind of security questions. I was quite sure that it was genuine, but they had to understand the issue they were creating.
