Please can anyone recommend books in print which deal with the various topics related to the Blitz on the Home Front (around the country as well as London) in Britain during the Second World War. I know John Ray's The Night Blitz, 1996 and Angus Calder's The Myth of the Blitz, 1991. Many thanks. Regards, David
You could try Walking the London Blitz by Clive Harris Published by Pen and Sword it is a very good book.
Not a book, but try this local history site for information on Bristol: http://www.fishponds.freeuk.com/
Would also recommend Clive Harris' book, which you can buy direct from the author at: http://www.frontlinelondon.com/
The best Blitz books were the 3 volume blitz then & now published by After The Battle, up to their normal very high standard!!
Hi guys, there are some excellent blitz memoirs that were written during or in the 1950's that are well worth getting hold of if you are interested in the subject, amongst my favourites are; Basil Woon - Hell Came to London Richard Collier - The City that Wouldn't Die (16 May 1941 Raid) Ritchie Calder - London Can Take it! and A City in Flames (Author escapes me) about the 29th December 1940 Fireraid. I have quite an extensive collection of blitz related books, though mostly from a London viewpoint due to my own family history... when I get home I could post a more comprehensive listing but I am lucky enough to be in Italy (Cassino) at the moment with Paul Reed and John Dray (5th Northants, 78th "Battleaxe"Division) What a week we are having! for an overall guide you simply cannot beat the After the Battle trilogy. An excellent book is: LONDON AT WAR, Philip Ziegler, Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1995, ISBN 0-679-43298-1 To me, the author captures the mood of the people and their attitudes toward Air Raids very well.
Philip Johnson's "The London Blitz" does the fire raid of December 29, 1940 very well. "London's Burning," by Constantine Fitzgibbon, part of the Ballantine/McDonald's series, is also excellent. He did it as a regular paperback as "The Blitz 1940." "Living Through the Blitz," by a guy named Harrisson, is also good.
