A different gripe: having to spend half an hour dabbing at covers with bits of sellotape to remove price label glue residue. Had to do front and back as it looks like they've been through several remainder shops before the one I got them at. They were Tanks in Detail Vols 2, 4, 6, 8 & 9 for £3 each - couldn't really leave them.

Having re-read the thread from the start, I wouldn't want to be too hard on the non-charity booksellers as they do seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate (like pubs and every other shop on the high street, I suppose). It's the non-ABE ones that tend to be good for bargains.
Mind you, an ABE one I popped into the other day had his books priced higher in the shop than online, so there's always the exception to the rule.

I went to this bookshop today and bought this for £6 was £9 but he is closing down so all stock is being sold at a reduction, he has been in Kingswood, Bristol for 15 years but is closing down as he has gone from 100 people in his shop a day to 100 in a week if he's lucky, he puts it down to the big retail shopping centres attracting people away from the high street shops, for me a shame........ but in a way did the secondhand bookshops do it in part to themselves by pricing themselves out of business given the prices online and in the charity shops not to mention car boots, well the shop closes on the 28th August and will leave in my area about 4 secondhand book shops. Probably a bit late to mention this, but the best way to remove price label glue is to spray some furniture polish onto a small area of a soft cloth or duster - don't wet it too much - and then rub reasonably vigorously. The polish lifts the glue very effectively without leaving marks.

Try WD40 as well, exellent for this and dose'nt stain either.

Been haggling with a bookseller on Ebay for yonks and my last offer is only £3 away from his price, still turned me down! He can keep it now the tight s-d for another 6 months.

Yes. Recently. Ordered an artillery book thru Abe and was originally quoted about
30 Aust dollars - great bargain. Next day the order was cancelled and the next
price was over 100 dollars, and rising. A great disappointment.

This past week in my efforts to clear my bookshelves and make room so I can buy more:lol:, im not mad I want to concentrate on Arnhem and Burma..... as books in these areas get harder to find also gets more expensive:(. So after a early success and 60 odd books sold I took some more select military books round 4 secondhand bookshops and I got these responses, "no one wants hardbacks they would rather have paperback reprints that are cheaper" "they would be ok for shop stock I will give you £20" (this was for 30 books of which one two vol set was 70-100 pound online!!!) "well I could buy them but they may well sit on the shelve for 6 months and not sell" (this was after offering me 2-3 quid a book then me knowing full well they would stick the book on thier shelve for £20:mad:) "Well when I oput them online I have to pay a percentage so I can only pay you SOD ALL REALLY!!! MY WORDS:rolleyes: I could go on all night but I dare say you get the picture, now most of my books are hard to find not cheap and seldom seen in these bookshops......... yet if you go by internet sites prices, these according to these booksellers including one who specialises in Military books:rolleyes: may be right or they may be wrong so pray tell just how do you establish a true value of a book! I know how come on a site such as this where we know our stuffB) and guess what look out for books for sale.......... in sale or trade thread it will take me longer than I would like but I wil be dealing with people who know what they are buying!;)

I have just had about 6 metres of shelving built into the walls of our front room, but have decided to leave my Burma library upstairs and near to hand for my research.

All my political and cricket books have gone downstairs, along with the various biographies etc.

I put in an offer on Ebay for a 'Best Offer' book at just £2 below the sellers asking price and he emailed me to say not to mess him about!!!

I went into the Aviation bookshop in Tunbridge Wells yesterday, and they must be having a joke price wise. I couldn't find a single battered second hand book that was less than £15. They have loads of bookshelves full to bursting, but clearly no interest in turnover!
