Interesting, if somewhat depressing, page of ships sinking: Sinking Warships!-World War Two The fearful shots of Barham going up (as cited by SD above) must be some of the most remarkable of the war.
1) An Allied Tanker sinks after a torpedo attack 2) U-550 sinking after attack from a coast guard destroyer 3) Plane going down over ocean 4) Plane going down in flames 5) Kamikaze 6) Germans surrendering to Canandian troops 7) Planes fly over the destroyed Reichstag
Cannot keep up with you lot, speed of the responses are too great. Yep, drawn by my Father in POW camp in his YMCA log book. Shows his Blenheim XD - L for leather V6258 of 139 Squadron shot down on 1st July 1941. The cartoon is showing Fw Fredriech-Karl Backmann coming in to finish them off. Ditched in the sea and full crew taken ashore in a Heinkel He.59. Nick
Interesting story behind the drawings Nick F. Your father was a very talented artist. Which POW camp was your dad in? How long was he in it for?
Shot down on the infamous 1st July 1941, with the loss of a Stirling from 7 Squadron and HSL 108 which both tried to save them from capture. Escaped with Jimmy McCairns (one of the thirty) but ran the wrong way when challenged straight into the arms of a German soldier and his girl. Moved from Dulag Luft to Stalag IXc, then Stalag Lufts 3 and 6 and then on to Thorn and Fallingbostal. Involved with tunneling but know no more. Spoke with a guy the other day who remembers him on the march north and the incident at Gresse. Trying to track down his movements from Fallingbostal to home with some difficulty as records are scetchy but have a lot of other information from our freinds in Holland. Will start up a POW art thread. Some real interesting stuff especially when you consider the theatres they ran. Look at some of the actors who were there. Regards, Nick
