One of the difficult, frustrating things about movies is that so often they can't get the whole thing right, just a piece or two of it. This is true of WWII movies, too; even in the midst of mediocre or downright bad war films, the odd moment of truth, excellence, or historical accuracy shines out. Casablanca was purest Hollywood, but Rains as Renault really nailed the attentisme of so many French officials in that time. And then there was THIS scene, when even the Vichy cops were moved:Casablanca La Marseillaise - YouTube

Sentimental as that moment was, there was some truth in it too. I love France and the French, and this always gets to me.

On Owen's recommendation I rented the Russian movie 'Come and See'. A fabulous move made on a shoe string budget. All the more interesting in that it was made in 1989 before the end of the Soviet Union.

Casablanca is one of my favourite movies, with Bogart, Raines and Greenstreet combining again in this movie Passage to Marseille (1944) - IMDb (Passage to Marseilles).

Another Bogart movie that brought to light for me the courage of the merchantmen was (Action in the North Atlantic) Action in the North Atlantic (1943) - IMDb.

My all time favourite MN/MM movie would be San Demetrio London. The handling of this "true story" epitomises the strengths of these very brave men whose efforts were not duly recognised at the time.

  5. Really off topic but my favourite film of all time is set partly during World War 2. That being "It's a Wonderful Life" the ultimate pick me up/feel good film.

I guess that's a topic in itself though? Films that are based around the time or encompass the World War 2 period but aren't directly about the War.

Then on from there, the Worst World War 2 films. Which off the top of my head would be Pearl Harbour - modern over special effect induced film with trashy dialogue and an awful script.

    Pearl Harbour
    There is no such place.
    It's Pearl Harbor.

    ;)

  7. Another reason do dislike the film. They couldn't even get the name right...

Not just World War 2. Might be the worst of any kind!

  10. Pearl Harbor: Michael Bay’s film was meant to be a 60th Anniversary commemoration of the Day of Infamy mixed in with the romantic sensibilities of Titanic, but it took all the bad cliches of wartime romance films and told too many stories set before and after Japan’s “dastardly attack” against the Pacific Fleet on Dec. 7, 1941.

Couldn't have wrote it better myself.

I go along with sandwichery's choice "Das Boot" is a most excellent war film which shows the horror that sub mariners went through I also include Zulu Dawn which in my view is better than Zulu mainly because it portrays what really happened at Isandlwana the film of Rorkes drift used a lot of poetic licence

Saving Private Ryan is probably my favourite war movie second only to Band of Brothers which isn't exactly a movie but brilliant all the same.
Enemy at the gates is also a good one. I am however, currently into the Korean Made war movies about the Korean war. Such as 'Brotherhood', '71-into the fire' and 'The Front Line' all big budget and very moving...on par with Saving Private Ryan with regards to special effects etc. Obviously they are subtitled which is the only downside but after a while you forget about them. All true stories as well! Well worth a watch.

My dad always said that Battleground was an accurate depiction of what it was like for the US Army during the winter of 44/45.

'Good old' Battleground - this classic really triggered my interest for WWII (esp. Ardennes)

Thanks Deacs, That film looks brilliant. I've been waiting for another good Korean made war movie to come along and this one looks perfect. I think they are so underrated. I'm going to have to sign out now and go and look for a copy of this on ebay/amazon.....thanks again ;)

'The Odd Angry Shot' is one of my favourites. It's about Australians in Vietnam and really gets the relationships and 'banter' between soldiers right. Also the patrol drills are spot on, good enough to use as a training film. The musical soundtrack is a bit poor though, veering between happy clappy hippy and Carry On Sergeant. Well worth seeking out.

If we're expanding the list outside of WWII (and Aussies outside of WWII :)), two really terrific ones are Gallipoli and Anzacs.

I wish they'd show them here again. I haven't seen them since they were broadcast in the early eighties.
