What's the Best Rifle of WWII and Why do you think so?

I'd say the Mauser for bolt action because its easy to clean and very accurate. The Garrand for semi -auto for accuracy and hi fire rate.

 I'd say that the StG44 was the best rifle. It was robust, reliable and it was resist to stoppages. It worked well in the cold of the Eastern front.
It was even made with a curved barrel for tank crews so that they could fire around corners to clear blind spots.
It was the first assault rifle and the russians would use certain of it's elements to develop the mighty AK47.

this is a very subjective question and one that produces very nationalistic answers.

For me it has to be the good old lee - enfield, hell of a recoil but very accurate and easy to fire. it was still being used by the rebels in Afghanistan!

    Is that a joke? :D

I kid you not, J McAllister.
There were two experimental versions the StG44(p) and the StG44(V) with curved barrels of 90 and 45 degrees. I think it was called the Krummlauf. images/smilies/default/ohmy.gif

    On this the best
    Bolt Action Rifle
Would be the Lee Enfield. The reloading was better than a Mauser and the Bolt easier to reach giving it a higher rate of fire.

    Semi Automatic Weapon
Despite what I said above the Garrand was a better rifle. The age of the Bolt Action was over and the UK were to slow to recognise it.

    Best Infantry Weapon
    Has to be the Stg44

You have to admit that a modern army equipped with the Stg44 and Mg42 wouldn't be disgraced today.

Morse, how many rounds could you put through a SMLE before the barrel started to burn the wood?

I'm fascinated with WW2 and read everything I can find.I recently discovered the STG44.I checked it out on Google and I was impressed with it's good looks.I'd love to own one of these if it were possible.

I don't know what you guys are thinking when you picked the k98 or lee enfield over the m1. If there were a couple of germans or japs or whatever in front of me I'd rather have a fast semi auto gun than some slow bolt action.
Oh and im talking about regular rifles not assualt rifles like the stg44.

What about the BAR? That must have been heavy. I think it was around in the First World War.

The original question was referring to rifle which would eliminate the BAR and StG-44 as they were fully automatic weapons. Sorry about the disregarded posts but the system was teething the other day when change over was made. It would help if I could delete these but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

. it was still being used by the rebels in Afghanistan!

A guy I used to work with brought in a picture to my office of his relatives(Mujahideen) that he visited in Afghanistan. There were ten of them standing in a line side by side with AK-47s, RPKs, RPDs, an MP-40 and an old guy with something used during TE Lawrence's time. This was in 1995 and he probably wouldn't have shown me that pic given the current state of events.
