Do any of you have an all time favourite role from the hundreds of war/military movies you have seen?

My overwhelming 1st choice would be Peter O'Toole as Lawrence of Arabia.

While were at it, how about a first choice of actors for their total body of work in war movie roles. For me, it has to Donald Sutherland. Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, The Eagle has Landed, Eye of the Needle, M*A*S*H.

Since you named the thread "military" not excusively "war" I feel free to vote for Tom Cruise as quite convincing in Top Gun.

The director has caught some of the authenticity and nerve of a fighter unit, but the competitiveness seems overrated and the comeradeship underrated, however.

Edward Fox as Brian Horrocks and Sean Connery as Roy Urquhart in Bridge too Far. Both of them seemed to captured the essence of the character they were playing. By all accounts Urquhart approved of Connery's portrayal of him, and Fox and Horrocks even became friends.

Anthony Hopkins as Johnny Frost in A Bridge Too Far... Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler or Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now are up there with my favourites...

Severely split loyalties (for obvious reasons) but as it's a personal favourite film, John Mills edges it for Dunkirk...

But my all-time favourite in a role has to be David Oxley as Billy Moss in Ill Met By Moonlight. Completely off the wall  Best Supporting Actor I've seen yet...

Although this was set in WW1, The African Queen, Humphrey Bogart & Katherine Hepburn is one of my favourite movies.

The acting of both disguises the war theme somewhat however it is a classic.
