A musing. Popped along again to have a look and I still am amazed that this was not a target during WW2. . This was shot in September 2020 from Harrow and Wealdstone railway bridge showing Bentley Priory in the distance . Back then the building was camouflaged but the tree line was not as great and this is the third highest point in London at 499ft above sea level.The location was well known to the Germans.In relative terns it sticks out like a sore thumb. . Two bombs were dropped on the site and were believed to be overspill from London raids. These bombs destroyed a wooden building and no casualties were recorded. Q. Did Nazi Germany know about RAF Bentley Priory and its importance as Headquarters Fighter Command? A. Yes, they knew about Bentley Priory. In 1938, 2 senior Luftwaffe officers, Udet and Milch, were hosted at Bentley Priory. Whilst they dined, they asked senior RAF officers how the ‘radar experiments’ were progressing.
