I wonder if someone can tell me what RE unit that had landed at SWORD beach arrived in the late afternoon at Benouville (area Pegasus Bridge) in some accounts its stated that they had AVRE's... Any idea to what unit these AVRE's belonged? Any information will be most welcome.

At 15.00 the OC 4 Commando reported to the squadron commander that the lock gates at Ouistreham were still held by the enemy and asked for assistance. Ten AVREs moved off at 15.30. They used Besa machine guns and Petards and the enemy surrendered at 16.30. Four AVRE moved off at 20.00 hours to support 2 Royal Irish Rifles at Benouville. The remainder of the squadron held the lock gates.
