During the Suez Crisis in 1956, a Canberra PR7, WH799, belonging to 58 Squadron based in Cyprus, was operating over Syria when it was attacked by a number of Syrian Air Force Gloster Meteor F8 aircraft. The Canberra was eventually shot down but not before 2 of the crew members managed to eject safely. The 3rd crew member, Flying Officer Roy Urquhart-Pullen (Navigator-Photographer) did not survive his exit from the doomed aircraft and today lies buried in the Anglo-American Cemetery, Beirut, Lebanon. My recent visit allowed me to take a number of images and videos in that same cemetery. His grave marker was renovated about 5 years ago (refer to attached image). One of the interesting aspects of this event is the fact that it shows a present-day RAF aircraft being shot down by British supplied aircraft i.e. Gloster Meteors. Has that ever happened again - since 1956? From memory the RAF and the Israeli AF clashed over Sinai in 1947. There was a passage in a book a long time ago, the details of which have faded.
