Summary: A new batch of scam emails purporting to confirm your order with Yes Asia (YesAsia.com) and Play.com went out this week. The scam relies on your freaking out when you see confirmation for an order you did not place, so that you will click the link to see "the order", but of course, the link really goes somewhere else -

    Take this one, for instance.

I was recently the victim of a scam. I had been receiving (genuine?) error messages on my PC saying something like "Windows has discovered a fault and must close down" with the options "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send".
After the third of these messages, I decided to send the report and duly clicked on the appropriate button.
THE VERY NEXT DAY - I got a phone call from an (Asian) gentleman who said they understood I was having trouble with my PC and that they could fix it on-line for a fee.
The fee duly paid, they then took control of my PC and proceeded to "clean" it. When they were finished - I was left with a blank screen and the PC would not turn on.
Needless to say, I hied me to my local Computer Emporium and had a new hard drive installed and changed all passwords including those for my on-line banking.
The implication is that these scammers have somehow got access to Microsoft's error reporting system.
    An expensive lesson.

Not quite Pete. What they did was mimick the 'look and feel' of the MS error message, and the link in the button was to their own place. Microsoft had nothing to do with it at all.

Now to ratchet up your paranoia level, I trust that the service people who you did go in the end did a VERY thorough job and no nasties were left, or you run the risk of having for instance a dormant key-logger which will record your passwords, visa numbers etc as you type them.

When you do get a suspicious button etc to press, see the link that pops up briefly in the bottom left hand corner of your screen, even then, the best is to just stay put ;)

Thanks for raising my paranoia levels Miguel.
I think I'm quite safe now as I had an entirely new hard drive installed and re-loaded the operating system without carrying over anything from the old data base.
It meant I lost all my emails and had to re-load a lot of software but it made me feel safer.

Then that was a tough one, but you should be off the hook now. Just don't follow any links in an email, if you feel it's a legitimate thing then just type in yourself the web address. That is, if you get some email from say the ficticious-for-the-purpose AllBlacks Bank, don't press the link, go to the www.allblacksbank_dot_com address or whatever you're after, and navigate inside. The link in the email will surely be taking you to somewhere in China, North Korea or someplace else you wouldn't want to go :)

Our lass got a random phone call yesterday from someone claiming to be from a motor insurance company claiming she had out standing money owed on a little bump she had while out on the road. She's never had a bump on the road.

When she pointed this they hung up. Never even asked for her by name.

I think that it was a coincidence that the scammer phoned you just after you'd sent an error message. The error messages are genuine and are intended to allow Microsoft to gather information about common faults. They don't have the resources to contact the people who sent them. IT hardware and software companies prefer people to phone them, often on a premium rate line.

The scammers phone people at random. The volume of error messages means that they will sometimes contact somebody who's just sent one. I've had lots of these calls. None have followed on from an error message and one came when my laptop was switched off and had been off for several hours.
