I started this thread some time ago after a disabled friend came very close to being affected by a really nasty internet virus.

Over the years I've caught the odd inference from fellow members that "people were not all that daft as to be caught out by these Nasties"

With that in mind, have a look at this article in today's Times.

Not all Nasties are as daft and naive as the archytepical Nigerians, some of them are becoming quite good at it. Once in a while i look into my spam can at my yahoo account and I am surprised by what Yahoo dumps there, some of them do look so "genuine".

I reckon that by now I've seen them all but they keep bringing out new versions !

In yesterday's post bag was this very short e-mail:

    Good Morning
Can you do me a favour
    Regards,

    Jean

Obviously a fake, on several counts but I had a look at SNOPES
    http://www.snopes.com/
and found this had been around for a long time. Reply at your peril !

Just had email asking me to change my ebay password. Looks like the stolen data is being used - I've only ever used that particular email address on ebay. Take care, look at the email header, it was" reply1.ebay" which has been used by scammers before.

Not sure what was in the email as my email client did not show it. I forwarded it to ebay.

    Hello,

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, I came down here to Manila, Philippines for a short vacation, unfortunately i was mugged at the parking loot of the hotel where i stayed all cash, credit card and mobile phone were stolen from me but luckily

i have my passports with mei have been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all ,and am having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let me leave until i settle the bills.

I'll need your help (LOAN) financially of £2,000 .I promise to make the refund once we get back home. Please let me know if i can count on you and i need you to keep checking your email because it's the only way i can reach you.

    xxxxxxxxxxx

I would possibly be interested to reply were it not for the fact that similar letters have been received by me before and without exception have all been scams sent by those who have usurped the name sender's mailing list.

I am, by nature, a suspicious bloke when it comes to receiving e-mails from unexpected sources.

I got such an example in yesterday's post bag, purporting to come from iTunes and asking me to check that I had indeed made a payment of a sum in excess of £100.

At first (and second) glance it seemed genuine, having all the right headings and pretty good grammar and it did say "if you did make this payment you can ignore this letter" but to my jaundiced eye it still smelt of scam.

i did my usual checkup at HOAXSLAYER & SNOPES and blow me if this particular sting has been around since 2010 !

Check it out by GOOGLING , as I did, "Cancel Order Scam itunes snopes" and then follow the sordid story through.

Now pass it on to your friends !
