I was looking through the CWGC roll of honour and noticed that there were 17 Australians buried there in WW2.

I assume they would be RAAF. Any ideas on how to obtain a definitive answer when you do not know their names?

    Thanks VP.

Did you do a general search Australians Bayeux for the first?

Insert an "A" for the second an run down the list?

    15 to go!

    Thanks Kyt,

None to go. How did you do the trace?

The RANVR death was D-Day. What is HMLCA (1106) HR? Any idea?

His Majesty's Landing Craft Assault (Hedgerow):

The LCA(HR) was a conversion of the British LCA which carried 24 spigot mortars, the Royal Navy's Hedgehog anti-submarine weapon instead of personnel. The mortars were fired as a barrage onto the beach to clear mines and other obstructions. Having discharged its mortars and its duty the LCA(HR) would then leave the beach area. They were towed to the beach by larger craft such as the LCT which would carry the assault teams of the Royal Engineersspecialist vehicles and equipment to complete the beach clearance.

Go to Searching for a grave

    Choose "Force Nationality"

Change the "Display the records with photos" to "Display all records"

And the rest is self explanatory - I chose "Australian Forces" and the cemetary i.e. Bayeux War Cemetary

    Thanks Kyt,

Sadly there were a few Australians killed on the 6th & 7th of June.

What was the thread that made reference to 50 squadron this week?

I think I will have to check out a few more cemeteries close to the landing beaches.

Just to save me going to the atlas, is there a list of cemeteries close/near the beaches where the Commonwealth forces were buried in WW2?

I cross checked with the AWM and came up with the following squadrons for those 16 RAAF who were listed.

    1 x 49 RAF Squadron
    4 x 50 RAF Squadron
    1 x 97 RAF Squadron
    1 x 106 RAF Squadron
    1 x 107 RAF Squadron
    1 x 181 RAF Squadron
    1 x 226 RAF Squadron
    1 x 453 RAAF Squadron
    1 x 460 RAAF Squadron
    3 x 576 RAF Squadron
    1 x 630 RAF Squadron

    HMLCA (HR) 1106:

For twenty three year Bruce Valentine Ashton and three others of his crew the morning of June 6th 1944 would end in disaster. Having attained the firing position, but before releasing her spigot mortars, the 1106 was rammed by the incoming LCT 899 of the 34th Flotilla, presumably the very craft that 1106 was supporting. All four perished when 1106 capsized.

Spidge, do you happen to have the url for these? It save me cross-referencing against the names I gave.

I may be able to find out the particular circumstances of their deaths from that.

I have a book somewhere (I think over in France) that lists all Australian casualties in Normandy.

Actually, you may recall, that one of my intentions with the WW2 Society is to set up some sort of British and Commonwealth visitors centre in Normandy. One of the aspects I would want to highlight there is the role of Australian, New Zealand and South Africans who fell in Normandy - most of them in Air Force units of course, but one or two others as well.

Good idea Paul. Written or electronic slide show?

I have decided to put them all on a spreadsheet so I can sort them for differing purposes. There are 32,224 in France alone, with the majority army from WW1. I am going to do the casualties for the other countries where Australians were involved as well.
