One of the volumes of Chorley's Bomber Command Losses which is still missing in my bookcase is 1939-1940. Unfortunatelly, it seems it isn't available anymore in regular bookshops or their webshops. As I am looking for losses on some dates during the attacks on the German invasion barges, I hope some of the forummembers here can help me. I am looking for the losses on the following dates: July: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 August: 12-13 September: 17-18 Thanks in advance!
Just an FYI. A second updated edition of that book is scheduled for December 2013: http://www.amazon.ca/Bomber-Command-Losses-Second-1939-40/dp/1906537402/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=XIVH9ILEJ4RE&coliid=I3T2XHX3WJAS0T
For the record during the Battle of the Barges,it has been recorded that Bomber Command lost over 800 aircrew of all designations. This figure would include known casualties, missing and those who became POWs. It was said that the Battle of Britain cost Fighter Command over 500 pilots based on the same loss categories.
Okay back and now to look through W R Chorley for you: On the July dates, Chorley lists no losses connected to attacks on barges. Losses are recorded for attacks on Kiel, Stavanger and some other German targets 6 July has one loss over France I can find for an 18 Squadron Blenheim R3662 but its mission was aerodrome attacks 9 July sees the loss of a 40 Squadron Blenheim L8836 from reconnaissance over Lisieux (Calvados) August 12-13 More mostly German losses as well as the disasterous raid on Aalborg which saw 11 82 Squadron Blenheims shot down One French loss is a 15 Squadron Blenheim R3768 lost in an attack on the airfield at Lannion Sept 17-18 More luck here. 44 Squadron Hampden loss P2121 lost attacking barges at Antwerpen 77 Squadron Whitley P4992 KN-T lost attacking Antwerpen 83 Squadron Hampden P1183 OL-K lost attacking Le Havre 105 Squadron Blenheim L9339 lost attacking Oostende 107 Squadron Blenheim T1852 lost attacking Calais 149 Squadron Wellington R3160 OJ-E lost attacking le Havre Hope this helps Mark
Thanks a lot Mark! About 12-13 september, I forgot to mention I was looking for the losses during the raid on the Dortmund-Ems Channel, where a lot of the barges had to pass an aquaduct.
