    P/O M.D.Green was with No 248 Squadron during the Battle of Britain flying in Blenheim's. On the 20th of October 1940 he was on a recce sortie off the Norwegian coast flying in Blenheim IVf (L9453) when he was shot down and killed. The other members of the crew were S.R.Gane & N.J.Stocks.

    Sgt L.N.Guy joined No 601 Squadron in early July 1940. He scored 2 kills on the 11th of August, plus 2 more on the 13th of August, another one on the 15th, and another two on the 16th. Guy was shot down and killed while flying a Hurricane (R4191) by a Bf 109 off the Sussex coast on the 18th of August 1940 at 14:15hrs, aged 25.

    Sgt F.B.Hawley joined No 266 Squadron in early July 1940. Following the destruction of a Heinkel He115 floatplane on the 15th of August off Dunkirk he is believed to have crashed his Spitfire(N3189) into the sea off Deal, Kent at 17:15hrs and was reported M.I.A., aged 23.

    P/O Richard Alexander Howley a Newfoundlander (but born in Victoria, Canada) was flying Defiant's with No 141 Squadron. On the 19th of July 1940 he and his gunner (A.G.Curley) were on convoy patrol. Their Defiant (L6995) was shot down off Dover and they were both killed by a Bf 109 of JG 51 at 12:45hrs.

    S/L Phillip Algernon Hunter was leader of No 264 Squadron and he and his gunner shot down a total of 9 and 1 shared. On the 24th of August 1940 at 12:40hrs when he and his gunner (F.H.King) went missing after chasing a Ju 88 out to sea flying a Defiant (N1935).

    P/O Alexis Jottard a Belgian he flew with the Belgian Air Force in a Fiat CR23 before the Battle of Britain. He and his friend ( J.Offenberg) went on to France when Belgium was over-run, then when the French signed the Armistice they headed for North Africa. They were then smuggled to from Casablanca to Gibraltar with some Polish Pilots. They joined No 145 Squadron at Drem, in Scotland on the 17th of August 1940. A.Jottard was shot down and killed in his Hurricane I (P3167) by a Bf 109 on the 27th of October 1940 at 17:15hrs off the Isle of Wight.

    Son of Leonard and Emily Jane Jowitt, of Thornton, Lancashire.

    RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL

    Sgt. Leonard 'Joey' Jowitt joined the R.A.F. at 16 as an aircraft apprentice. He served in India and on his return in 1937 trained as a fighter pilot. He then joined No 85 Squadron and was flying patrol on the 12th of July 1940 in his Hurricane I (P2557). He crashed into the sea off Felixstowe at 08:50 after attacking a Heinkel He 111 of II Gruppe of KG 53 and was killed. His body was never recovered.
