Battle of Arnhem: Tour of Duty | Five

This was just advertised on Fiver (30 on Freeview) next Weds at 8pm, although I think the actual programme is on Five. Talk about a new twist on the reality tv genre.

The plan is to take a group of typical teenagers and train them to recreate the famous September 1944 aerial parachute assault on Arnhem in the Netherlands.

I'm guessing no one has risk assessed the show at the time of printing the above.

I wonder where they rounded up the SS panzer Divisions as the opposition and will seem farcial without real bangs going off and the fear of the reality of war

According to the blurb about it in the website its run by ex paras and Airborne guys, so there's bond to be lots of shouting, lots of mud (according to the trailer) and lots of hardwork so I'm sure it will be enough to scare the teenagers who are taking part :)

Apparently the Kids came from Croydon which is twinned with Arnhem. It's on for two nights 10th & 11th November, Channel 5 at 20:00

Poor Arnhem to be twinned with Croyden (I can say that as I lived there for a short period of my life)

I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it. Except that it sounds like there will be a bunch of young people who know about Arnhem who didn't do beforehand, and that can't be a bad thing. I saw a similar programme about the D-Day landings a few years ago that involved veterans acting as advisors, and that worked quite well.

I know they'll be concentrating on the parachute battalions but I hope they don't forget the gliders.

    Battle of Arnhem: Next Generation

Two-part documentary that asks what happens when a group of modern-day teenagers experiences the harsh realities of life on the front line of a World War II battle. After some intensive training, the teens are dropped out of a plane at 10,000 feet over the fields of Arnhem, where they will attempt to recreate the WWII mission popularised in 'A Bridge Too Far' - but will they all be able to cope with the pressure?

What a great experience for the young men, a lovely idea for a programme and educational too. One of the veterans interviewed has recently published his autobiography, DROPPED IN IT by Colin Hall on Amazon as ebook, out in paperback in 1 or 2 weeks.

DROPPED IN IT, true story of a WWII veteran at Operation Market Garden, Arnhem,1st Airborne Division eBook: Colin Hall, Deborah K. Hall: Kindle Store

    Hi Stan,
Can you confirm that Colin's book is going to be published "properly" as a paperback?
    All the best............:)

I don't think I'm normally this blunt but Andrea has told me to stop shouting at the TV.

What a load of shit !
