Hi Thought I would add a few pics from our tour to Bastogne of this year. Been a busy year. Again me and the kids, and....er, a female friend... Truly a place to visit on your pilgramage. Cheers Marc.
Good pic Marc. Bastogne is another one of the battlefields I would like to visit, although I think I will go back to Normandy first and then do Arnhem and Bastogne in one trip. What is the atmosphere like there? Is it a good trip?
Hi Mateys The trip to Bastogne was fantastic. We took it in as part of our tour to the Region along with Verdun (WW1). You need to speak some French (though it is in Belgium) english is spoken, but very basic. The locals are very friendly. The museums are excellent, the area is so green and lush (in the summertime) and the old castle at La Roche is excellent. When it rains, IT RAINS... Loads to do, ie canoeing, kayaking, climbing etc.... The bars and local eateries are good and nearly every village we went through had some sort of artifact as their centrepiece. Standing out in the hills, knowing the history, you can sense what went on. Plenty of American presence. The museum at Bastogne with the memorial has to be seen. Nuce area, friendly people, lot to do and see, definately worth the trip. Cheers Marc.
Hi A couple of more pics I found...mainly from the musuem... The last pic was taken in Houffalize, on a main bridge, just outside Bastogne. It reads as thus... "....Before the arrival of my Engineers Your skillful Artisans Constructed a bridge In 45 minutes." Lanham Colonel U.S.Army 10.8.44 You know the rest of the story..... Cheers Marc.
Great pics Ypresman and thanks folr posting them. Really great to see what Bastogne looked like in real life. I'm heading for Berlin next year and hope to get out to Seelow and get some pics of the area, but Bastogne has been put on my "must see" list!!
