Looks like a Bailey bridge to me, and given he's an Engineer it's very likely he had a hand in building it, and also that he's part of the team to maintain it which would explain why he's sitting there, quite literally waiting for something to go wrong.

Typically when a Bailey was constructed some engineers would be left with it to maintain it, make sure it wasn't ever overloaded etc, as well as a few MPs to control who crossed it.

As for where it is I haven't a clue, but perhaps the user Sapper might recognise it. There's a good thread on Baileys on this very forum; http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/weapons-technology-equipment/4367-bailey-bridges.html

Hello All. Please can someone help. My father was in 233 field company RE attached to 50th Northumbrian Division. His war was between D Day and Niemegen. I have a picture that has been kindly put onto the Bailey Bridge Website. Please look at the link Baileybridge - baileybrug - pont bailey - bro bailey. The second pic on the page is my father Gordon Belcher. Does anyone know where this photo was taken and or the type of bridge upon which he is seated. Is it possible that he was involved in building this bridge or is it more likely that he is just sitting on it in passing. I would like to know where it is and what it is. Please help.

A pic of a section of bailey at arrowmanches museum:D

Feel free to say what an excellent photo I took with a mobile phone:lol:

Hate to say, as it is a nice photo, but that's not Bailey, it's a roadway section from Mulberry.

The brick buildings in the background tells me it isn't Normandy, as red brick is pretty rare there. The shapes of the windows say more Belgium and Holland to me, than France.

There is still a 'Bailey Bridge' in use over the River Taute at Carentan.
Every time I cross this bridge I think and wonder about the young men who built it .

Don't have a photo Paul (sorry),
Will look through some of this years publications for the 65th Anniversary published by the 'Manche Libre' newspaper
If you happen to be in Carentan it is opposite the LeClerc supermarket.

Picture of bailey bridge at Carentan taken this morning 1st Sept. 2009.

The bridge is named after Major Tucker who was killed in action June 1944.

We are happy to take photos when we are visiting cemeteries etc as long as it isn't too far away .
Will put on a 'post' for photo requests on this Forum and another which I frequent more often, to say when and where we will be going
