Around here we don't have to look too hard to find alligators. Every now and then I see coyotes on our airfield and snakes go without saying.

you do realise that contrary to popular myth - and slipdigit's tale of his best friend - that the male aligator is in fact - Man's best friend !
The female aligator lays hundreds of eggs and the male aligator eats all of 95% of all aligator eggs laid by the female - if he failed to do this little chore - the whole world would be up to our waists in aligators all snapping at us - whereas the coyote does keep the rodent population in check - can't think of any good reason for snakes though.
    Cheers

    Hope he pulls through slip.

We have little rattlers in our neck of the woods. They are called Massasaugas. Nobody's died from a bite in Michigan since the 1940's, but I killed the one that was about 8' from my back door anyway.

He's vastly improved from this morning. He is eating and drinking and seems to be on the mend. We're keeping inside, away from the other dogs for a few more days.

The coyotes don't really bother me too much, but they have no natural predator and they're getting to be too many. They are getting bold and messing with things they don't need to.

    Thanks Steve for asking.

He's doing quite well, that $700 anitvenon did the trick. He slept outside last night for the first time since the bite. Neighbor of mine has had his dog bitten twice this past week. The drought is bringing the snakes out, apparently. They are treating him with benadryl and he is not doing well, from what I understand.

Thought you took Benadryl for hayfever?!

    Jeff -
Glad to hear your dog is on the mend - pity about the neighbours dog though - we had a teenager acting smart in the Okanagan Valley this week - picked up a small rattler to scare his girl friend - he was bitten and rushed to hospital - then another one before they pumped enough serum into him - he was a pretty scared teen - and is still swollen - bad way to learn !
    regards
    Tom

Good to hear the news on your dog. I should have been a vet. As I read it 700USD for the antivenum and 700 USD just for injecting it, you told him what was wrong. WOW.
Down here we are up to the proverbial in Alligators in fact just up the road there is a restaurant where you can eat the other 5% the males leave. Yup just like chicken.
In view of this experience you might have to reconsider your location to "Just not far enough out of the woods" lol:D

don't fancy having alligators up to the proverbials - and eating the 5% left by the males but on a visit to South Africa - and in the best Hotel in Capetown we were quite surprised to see on the menu as a starter was the gourmet item of "smoked crocodile" - I passed !

Really tough morning for me. A military warehouse full with all kind of bombs just explode near Sofia, and my home. The explosions continued 3 hours non-stop, destroying windows and doors of homes nearby.
One of the bombs fell down near the bulgarian airport, and a team of sappers were send there to defuse it.
Its miracle that nobody died and there are few wounded, even the soldiers guarding the warehouse manage to evacuate. Half of the capital felt the explosions, and i was really near, i even manage to see the explosions from my apartment.
The reasons for the explosions are still unknown, fireman crew can't enter near the warehouse because there are still minor explosions.

Thanks Adam, not before long a warehouse in Albania blown near there capital, and killed many civilians. What a coincidence eh?
A good think that there isn't anybody killed and just few who are wounded by the broken windows.

    [IMG]More Alabama critters.

    Near Livingston, Alabama .............

Look at what James Snipe hit with his car on county road 24 north-east of Livingston AL in Sumter County. The lion was still alive but unable to move, so our neighbor called animal control and they came and put him down. A land owner had seen this one a week before dragging off a 320 lb steer.
Our neighbor is an amateur taxidermist and he's going to stuff him. This one weighed 260 lbs. while most maturemale mountain lions weigh 80 to 150 lbs. We had no idea they still roamed around here!
