After over a year of waiting I finally got my dad's service record.

He was in the Middle East and thats where I saw the BNAF on his service record.

In addition he gained the Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp, any ideas where I could get this from. I never saw his medals and would like to build up a replica set even if they arent his.

    Hello

BNAF - British North Africa Forces (?)

Have you considered that he may never have claimed his original campaign medals if you never saw them? If you are his official n.o.k. or else have consent of others with a greater claim, you will still be able to get them from the (presumably) Army Medal Office - its address is 'pinned' on this site somewhere and is easy to find on-line from its name.

What you will need to do is write to them giving your father's service number and name etc. - they will use the same papers to assess his entitlement - alongside a photocopy of his death certificate/obituary and also a copy of your own birth certificate or similar to prove relationship. It would also help to formally sign and date any application. (If you are uncertain you can just write a letter asking them to confirm whether his medals were ever claimed beforehand.)

If not, you can pick up either original issues or else copies quite cheaply (£10-15 with the bar): best to have a look on ebay. He would also be entitled to the WW2 War Medal, and most likely also the 1939-45 Star and possibly Defence Medal. Many who served in N. Africa later fought in Italy. British WW2 medals were issued unnamed to save money, so getting others' medals in lieu of his own is no real problem. (If you want some links to enable you to buy replacements or modern copies please leave a message, but probably worth pursuing it with the Medal Office.)
