Award Soldier's Medal Gnr. W.W. Regan, 208th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery (RA HAA)

    Gnr. William Walter Regan (11268648) 208th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery (RA HAA) was awarded the Soldiers Medal for rescuing American airmen from a crashed B-26 Marauder at Pantelleria airfield.
    The aircraft Regan ran to was a B-26 from 443rd Bomber Squadron, 320th Bomb Group serial 41-18195 "Feather Merchant" the aircraft took off at 11.50 from Libyan airfield.

    Co-Pilot: F/O. Collins
    Bombardier: 1st Lt. Carroll
    Engineer gunner: S/Sgt. Bowles
    Radio Gunner: T/Sgt. Krompoch
    Aerial gunner: S/Sgt, McLead [McLeod?]

    Misson 44:

    Pilot Wilbur H. Welch (0-436734) was killed the rest of the crew survived and appear to have survived the war. Welch was initially buried at 11 Corps Cemetery Mateur, Tripolitania, Libya before being reburied at Knoxville National Cemetery, X, 54-B.


    Regan also survived the war he was born In Marylebone, London 1920, married 1941 (nee Parry) and died in 2009. Regan enlisted on the 25th September 1941 with 205th Heavy Anti-Aircraft training Regiment, embarked for North Africa 15th October 1941.
