Award Military Medal T/Sjt. Willard A. Springborn, 409th Infantry Regiment, 103rd Infantry Division (17156664)

Technical Sergeant WILLARD A. SPRINGBORN, 17156664, (then Staff Sergeant), Infantry, Company G, 409th Infantry Regiment. For gallantry in action. During the daylight hours of 21st December 1944, the advance of Company G, in the vicinity of Ober Otterbach, Germany, was stopped by heavy enemy fire coming from a pillbox.

Sergeant Springborn, taking 20 pounds of TNT with two men similarly equipped, crossed 75 yards of fire-swept terrain working his way to a position adjacent the pillbox. He relieved his two comrades of their burden, skilfully maneuvered his way to the pillbox under intense fire, placed and detonated the charges. Sergeant Springborn's actions which resulted in neutralising a serious menace and capturing 16 of the enemy reflected the highest traditions of the military service from St. Paul, Minnesota.
