Award Military Medal T/Sgt. Douglas J. Shaffer, G Company, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division (35772909)

On 25th November 1944 the 2nd Battalion, 116th Infantry launched an assault on the enemy stronghold of Koslar, Germany. After advancing some distance into the town, the two leading rifle companies were surrounded by a large force of the enemy. This situation prevailed for two days during which time several fierce enemy counterattacks were repulsed. On 27th November when information was received by radio that other elements of the regiment were attacking in an effort to relive the two beleaguered companies, Technical Sergeant Shaffer was selected to contact and re-establish wire communication with this advancing force. Although this hazardous mission necessitated his crossing open terrain which was covered by enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Shaffer successfully infiltrated through the enemy lines and reached his destination. With complete disregard for his own safety, he then led a patrol back over the same hazardous route and re-established telephone communication with the advancing friendly unit and the beleaguered companies.
