On 7th August 1944 Sgt. Porteous was employed as Troop Sergeant in the leading tank in support of an attack by 9th (British) Infantry Brigade in YAUDRY map ref 658318. The going was very bad being cut up by high banks, orchards, sunken roads, etc. One of these formed the Infantry start line and could only be crossed at one point. Sgt. Porteous swept and removed several mines from this crossing, all the time under fairly heavy shell and SAA fire. His action made it possible for the tanks to advance and remain in support of the Infantry. On arrival on the Infantry first objective Sgt Porteous' tank was it by A.P., he was at the time engaging a machine gun which was causing the Infantry some trouble on their flank. He continued to engage the Machine gun until his tank was again hit on the turret putting the guns out of action. He himself severely wounded in the arm, along with two other members of his crew. Sgt. Porteous then evacuated his own crew plus the crew of another tank which had been knocked out to a place of safety, and then walked back on foot to guide the Armoured Ambulance up to them. He then reported to his Troop Leader and assisted in making some observation and correction of fire. It was only then that he allowed himself to be evacuated and refused treatment himself until the others had been dealt dealt with. Throughout the action this NCO showed the highest standard of devotion to duty and personal example was an inspiration to all under his command.
