Award Military Medal Pfc. Lewis D. Darby, HQ & HQ Company 3rd Bn, 26th Infantry Regiment,1st Infantry Division, V Corps (36544553)

A battalion of enemy infantry, supported by approximately thirty tanks, attacked positions in the vicinity of Dom Butgenbach, Belgium, on 21st December 1944. Private DARBY, though subjected to heavy cannon fire from the German tanks and machine pistol fire from attacking infantrymen, fearlessly remained in his position and placed deadly rocket fire into the attacking force. Detected as he moved to a second firing position, he was brought under withering machine gun fire. Gallantly, he continued his advance, approached a tank within close range and fired several rockets which caused the tank to burst into flames. His courageous actions assisted materially in repelling the enemy infantry with heavy losses and silenced the tank's machine guns which were inflicting casualties upon his comrades.
