Award Military Medal Pfc Artis O. Ballard, Company E, 335 Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, VII Corps (36574173)

On 6th January 1945, Private BALLARD's company made an attack with its objectives as Douchamps, Belgium. When the advance of his platoon was temporarily halted by heavy enemy machine gun fire, Private BALLARD, a rifleman, voluntarily crawled approximately seventy-five yards to the emplacement hurled a hand grenade and killed three members of the crew.
Boldly he charged the emplacement and captured the remaining two Germans. Later, when his unit was again halted by enemy fire which had killed and wounded eight of his comrades, Private BALLARD advanced to reconnoitre the enemy positions. Upon reaching a well-fortified emplacement, he threw several hand grenades and upon their explosion, quickly entered the position. In this encounter, Private BALLARD killed an additional ten Germans and captured three prisoners. Private BALLARD's gallant actions resulted in the annihilation of this well-fortified strongpoint and permitted his platoon to advance without further hostile resistance.
