Award Military Medal L/Sgt. James Scott Fraser 5/7th Bn The Gordon Highlanders (2881923)

On Friday 16th June 1944 the Battalion was holding a position astride the main road in the BOIS DE BURES area. In the afternoon, the forward company was attacked by tanks accompanied by infantry and were ordered to fall back. Shortly afterwards the tanks began to come down the main road firing their machine guns down the road towards Bn, HQ. L/Sgt. Fraser was in charge of a 6 pdr anti-tank gun just outside of the road the entrance to Bn HQ. He was in his O.P. one side of the road was his crew were in slit trenches near the gin on the other side of the road. Realising the position and in spite of the fact that the road was swept by machine gun fire he crossed the road to rally his gun crew. He found two had been wounded and there was only one man left near the gun.

By his coolness and complete disregard for his own safety he managed to get the remaining man onto the fun. This man laid the gun on the oncoming tanks whilst L/Sgt, Fraser directed the fire and loaded the gun entirely on his own completely unprotected from the machine gun fire. He scored a direct hit almost at once and finally knocked out two tanks at 400 yards range down the road. The rest of the enemy withdrew. By his own inspiration and power of leadership Sgt Fraser in this very critical situation displayed courage of the highest degree.
