After being shot down they received medical assistance from a Dutch female doctor and some nurses who assisted in their evacuation from the immediate area of the aircraft, which was under constant small arms fire. They then hid in a drainage tunnel for three days, surviving on Simpson's 24 hr ration pack, emergency rations from the inflatable dinghy from their aircraft and water which was brought to them by a local farmer, until the Polish paratroops landed at Driel on the afternoon of the 23rd and one of their patrols discovered them.
