Military Medal

On the morning of 11th July 1942 3/5 Royal Tanks made contact with about 25 enemy tanks at ALAM NAYAL (880269) and engaged them. During the ensuing fight of the tanks of 11 Troop 'C' Squadron was hit and penetrated by an 88mm shell. Three of the crew were wounded and as the inside was smoking the whole crew "baled out". They were picked up by an Infantry Carrier.

4343514 Cpl. Ellis, V, who was the driver of a neighbouring tank saw what had happened. He noticed that the tank hit had not gone up in flames as expected by its crew. he then showed great initiative and courage under heavy fire by handing over his tank to his second driver, dismounting through the driver's visor dashing to the disabled tank and driving it back to a place from which it was able to be recovered.

In my opinion this gallant act set a very fine example indeed.

Bar to Military Medal

On 19th July 1944 Sjt. ELLIS was in command of a firefly tank which was taking part in the advance to BOURGEBUS Ref Map 1/50,000 CAEN 7061. From a flank he saw one of the Cromwells in the troop get knocked out by a German Mk VI. The two remaining Cromwells had meanwhile registered hits which proved quite ineffective. Sjt. ELLIS immediately and just un time moved across into position and holed the Mk VI twice before it was able to any further damage.

Almost immediately afterwards more Mk VI tanks moved up to attack in the fields surrounding the village. This time Sjt. ELLIS was behind cover and seeing only one, he hit it and set it on fire. The remainder were in rear and took cover. Sjt ELLIS then set about stalking them on foot. It was a very difficult task on account of the presence of enemy infantry in the surrounding fields. With great determination and in spite pf heavy sniping, he found a suitable place from which to shoot. Sjt. ELLIS then returned to his tank and manoeuvred it into the position he had found from where he knocked out and destroyed a third Mk VI.
