Members of the Langton Matravers Auxiliary unit have been remembered in Dorset.

A memorial plaque was unveiled during the ceremony. Over 100 people attended including two Dorset Auxiliers.

Because the sacrifice the members of the unit and so many like them throughout the UK were willing to make for the defence of the country it is so important that we begin to recognise them - a really poignant event.

I have been fascinated by the Auxiliers for years, and indeed last week was given an updated copy of Arthur Ward's book on the subject.

I agree - the Auxiliary Units deserve more recognition - selfless, modest men, who never asked for, nor received, anything.

    I lived in Langton Matravers from 1978 - 1984!
    It's my Wife's hometown (village)
We were married there in 1985.
My kids were Christened there in 1987 & 1989.
I have only very recently moved out of the area.

Chats1 were you at the ceremony?

DavidW - Unfortunately I was unable to attend but a number of Coleshill Auxiliary Research Team (CART) members did make it along - a very poignant occasion.

Quaker - not sure whether you have seen but CART has successfully lobbied the Royal British Legion for Auxiliary Unit veterans to take part in the Cenotaph march past in November - the first ever official recognition - which of course is great news! You can see more about it here http://www.coleshillhouse.com/march-at-the-cenotaph-campaign.php.

The CART team is also going to be at the Bletchley Park Forties Family Festival weekend this bank holiday weekend if you can pop along and say hello and find out more from our researchers about the recent Aux Unit discoveries http://www.coleshillhouse.com/cart-at-bletchley-park.php
