Were they liked by the French?

The diary I'm currently reading says the local inhabitants (Forceville, Varennes and Hedauvilles) are not very friendly after having much to do with the Australians in the last war.

I thought they were quite well liked as they were paid more than the poor old Tommies & so spent more in the estaminets.
    :)
Then again they did have a reputation for rowdiness.

I think the VOLUNTEERED to do a job, and were quite efficient.

Australia had a 65% casualty rate, the highest in WW1, and all volunteers.
