Seems to me there was a great deal of killing went on at Cassino - but when the noise makers went off on their coffee breaks in the evening - the Nightingales could still be heard sining their magnificent song......

Back to birds at Auschwitz, just had this reply on Birdforum.

Birds at Auschwitz ? - BirdForum

I visited Auschwitz today, admittedly a very noisy time of year for birds. The group I was with only wanted to visit camp 1 (composed of brick buildings, which I couldn't recall ever having seen on TV - usually images are of Birkenau).

It was actually fairly birdy. House Sparrows and Jackdaw dominated the carpark. While walking around I saw Blackbirds, heard Blue Tits, and saw one life bird - Black Redstart, and a yearbird - Treecreeper.

Cheers for that Owen. Guess that answers the question once and for all.

I just remember somebody telling me that once. Was never sure it would be true.

    Cheers.

    Hi
I too cannot speak for Auschwitz , but can I came across Dachau when travelling back through Europe and visited the camp , and can say that I and the wife found it very eerie and certainly heard no birds or anything within its confines , apart from hushed voices of visitors . I can assure you no ones pulling your leg , and if ever your near any of the camp locations call in and feel the atmosphere for yourself , its something you won't forget .

My sister moved out to France 5 yrs ago in the Limogue area of France approx 1 hr away from Oradour-Sur- Glane , I visit my sister at Christmas ,I had read about Oradour and being so close could not miss the chance of going . We arrived at the "new village" opposite and just looking onto the outskirts of the massacred village it looked very eerie . We entered the village, before you actualy start getting among the burned out and shelled house's the atmosphere changes from curious to a more a depressive feeling , very hard to describe .We wandered in and out of the narrow streets, read where the Nazis had waited for all the villagers to return from work from around the district(the SS had started to congregate outside of the village 2 day's previous apparently not arouse suspicion) before they carried out the extermination of innocent men women and children , where the women and children were brought into the church a wooden box with wires hanging from it was placed on the church floor and detonated(incendery) , then the inside of the church was straffed by the SS as the women and children tried to escape(account of a woman survivor who had climbed onto the alter and dropped about 20ft onto grass) , barns where they had taken some of the men set the barns on fire and machine gunned them(again eye witness account of a survivor) the childrens girl and boy's nursery/primary school they emptied before shooting and burning them ,the bakery where they had found bodies stuffed into the ovens , the garage where the owner who resisted was shot , houseold items, cars, tractors abandond by there owners as they were marched to their deaths still there, the area where they took the other men from the village shot them, piled bales of straw on the bodies and set it alight ,as you walk the streets you try to picture the chaos and fear these innocent people must have felt , yes if you ever get the chance to visit Oradour-Sur-Glane do, and you will understand how hard it is to describe the atmosphere and feelings that you feel while being there. An imprint of these images are left in your mind ,I had to go again when I visited my sister again the following year ,this might sound odd but to fully appreciate the atrocities commited, the second time gives you more of a feeling and understanding of what went on .(642 Victims )
I must also mention the other small villages that suffered the same fate in the hands of the SS
    Lidice- Czecoslovakia 10th June 1942 476 Victims
    Marzabotto- Italy Sept/Oct 1944 1836 Victims
    Maille- France 25th August 1944 124 Victims
    Distomon-Greece 10th June 1944 239 Victims
and there are probably others not even recorded .

Pretty much happened all over the place. Every country can point to instances where this happened. but it was particularly nasty and numerous in the Soviet Union.

My father visited Belsen in the 70's with the Life Guards. he said there were no birds or insects there and he was told animals did not come close.
Seems the stench of death still hangs over these sites.

I agree.... Was certainly very quiet when we visited there....

After reading Owens post from his mate on a bird forum, someone who naturally likes to notice birds about, I'd say it's safe to say there are birds at Auschwitz.

It's just that some people don't notice them.

When I visited Bergen-Belsen several years ago I saw several small birds and did hear some as well.

However there was still a strange feeling about the place.

I was told that due to the large amounts of DDT and other antiseptic agents that was buried into the soil at Belsen that it did keep wildlife at bay, Also on my visit to Auschwitz it was very quite and not much wildlife around but it was in the winter when I visited.

I think it is more of a reflection on what took place and the inhumanity of it all , the birds and wildlife are there we just blank them out on the basis of the emotional experience.

The proof is in post #72 of this thread. The youtube link clearly shows birds and you can hear them singing. Mythbusters eat your heart out.

Having visited a few of the Camps during winter months they were very quiet and unbelievably frightening places. Heard a few birds but, the overwhelming sense was that you could almost sense the horror that occured there and for me, it was almost as if you could touch it.

Places everyone should visit at least once in their life.
