    Hi all,

I'm looking for advice with travel arangements and hope someone can help.

My Great Uncle was killed in June 1918 in France and as far as I know, no one from my family have been able to visit his grave. I would like to rectify this situation and make a trip myself in the not too distant future. Not having been to France before and having no intention of driving over there I'm looking for help.

My Great Uncle lies in the Communal Cemetery at Auchy-les-Hesdin. Hesdin is a small town in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais at the junction of the rivers Canche and Ternoise on the road between Montreuil and Arras. Boulogne being the nearest French port, I need to know the best way to get to Hesdin from there. I had thought of contacting the battlefield guided tour operators but as there are only four servicemen buried there I didn't think they would have Hesdin in their intinary. Would a taxi from Boulogne cost too much?

    Any advice welcome

    Regards
    Peter.

    Peter,

There is a train line that goes from Bolougne-Sur-Mer virtually direct to Hesdin 60-70 kms, with a small drive by taxi or a walk of 3 or 4 kilometres.

This is only off the internet but you could check it with Eurorail.

I made a map but it fails to upload.

Go to the French Railways Web Site. www.voyages-sncf.com.

You will find that there are about 4 trains a day from Boulogne to Hesdin and back, backed up by coach between the two towns.

However,Auchy les Hesdin is on the main line from Boulogne via Etaples to
Arras and is the next stop out of Hesdin. It should be possible to complete the whole journey of about 1 hour by rail.

    Spidge and Harry,

Many thanks for your input, it has given me some ideas on how to get to Hesdin, I've copied you remarks for future reference and I'll let you know when I decide to go.

    Best Regards
    Peter.
