26 ATS personnel died as a result of a bombing raid on Great Yarmouth,
Norfolk on 11th May 1943 when the hotel that they were billeted in recieved a direct hit, 25 are recorded as died on that day and one other, who is recorded as died on 13th May, was probably the 26th.

My interest now, with the welcome assistance of forum members, is to add any further details to their profiles that you may have and, in particular a photograph of their graves. Their names and cemeteries are listed below and grave references are available if required.

The hotel was recorded as being located on North Way, Great Yarmouth but Ihave been unable to locate North Way in my search. Can anybody assist inidentifying this hotel and, if possible, a photograph of it in pre-bombing days.

It appears they were on North Drive when they were killed. Here are some links you may find interesting

It is an indication of this changing face of war that Fulstows first soldiers to be killed were women, who lost their lives as a result of air action. Viola Wells and Marjorie Sutton, both serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service were killed along with 24 of their comrades when the hotel on North Way, Great Yarmouth, in which they were billeted, received a direct hit during a bombing raid on 11th May 1943. The two girls had joined up on the same day.

It appears some Wrens were killed too in the same year

I found your thread through the kind people on RootsChat.com who sent me this link, as I am trying to find out more information on my family history.

My Dad's cousin was Kathleen Gaunt who was killed with the rest of these women. I would love to know more about what happened. I live in Australia and have no way of tracing her life than the internet.

    Kind regards,
    JMR

Believe it was North Drive (not North Way) THis is the road that runs north from the main street (Regents Road) parallel to the beach. (which is called North Denes)

Whilst I was at Hither Green to get some info for another member and family research relating to WW2, I remembered I'd taken photos for someone on this Forum. Just snapped them and back tracked here to find your thread.

ATS Headstones are now in my Brain's search engine whenever I go to another cemetery.

I have to go back to Hither Green again shortly and will collect the other ladies that I missed.

    Cheers - Robert

I've found a cousin of Kathleen Gaunt at long last and although we have not discovered a photo of her as yet, I'll be going over to England in December/January and will take a photo of her grave and post it.

There are other family still in the Bradford area it seems and I'll see if they are prepared to share their photo colllection with me.

    Cheers,
    Jill
