My father Fred Lowe served in Military Police in Palestine and had the misfortune of being ambushed by the Stern Gang. Uncertain about the date but believe he was there 1944-1946 and earned the GSM with Palestine clasp. Travelling at night alone on a motorcycle the Stern Gang terrorists strung a wire across the road knocking him off the bike. Whilst unconcious from the crash they barbed wire whipped him and left him for dead. Luckily for my father he was found still alive the following morning and had to have constructive plastic surgery mostly to head and shoulders. Doctors were amazed he didn't lose an eye. He made a full recovery and later went on to be an official guide at Belsen concentration camp. Do any members know of a good book or resource where I can further research Stern Gang atrocities?

Better known as the Lehi - good info here... who killed my neighbour, a Canadian peacekeeper with the UN there. The jeep he was riding in was blown up by an armour piercing round.
Midshipman It should not be forgotten that it was the Stern gang who instituted the first "letter bomb" when they sent a book to Roy Farran ( Major, SAS - DSO and 3 Mc's) addressed to R. Farran - REX Farran opened it and was blown to bits- and their Mother seriously injured … Cheers
This is all fascinating. As I have been largely concentrating on WW1, I don't know a great deal about the Arab / Israeli business other than the Sykes/Picot Agreement and it's aftermath, and a bit about the Zionist movement. I have always felt that just about all the problems around the world had their roots in the First War. I hadn't realised either that the Jews formed "avenger" groups to knock off as many Nazi war criminals as possible. Hazel C.
I am unreliably informed by Wiki that there were four previous instances of letter bombs or packages, the first one being in 1764.
Geoff Perhaps I should have written " of the 1944- 48 Jewish campaign of the various gangs to take over Israel " but it was the popular press of the day who claimed it to be the first…doubt if many were around to remember 1764…..and it was a Jewish gang who claimed responsibility - which left no doubt in many minds... Cheers
Can't see that weapons of destruction were ever forgotten. But I reckon the Chinese did this as they had gunpowder before anyone!
Wolverhampton bomb victim's last plea: No revenge In St. Nicholas's churchyard (or possibly in the churchyard extension, I don't recall which), at Codsall, Staffordshire.
Looking for something else I came across the website of the (British mainly) Police History Society and in their online journal (back issues only) a 2005 issue has an article on Rex Farran's murder (4 pgs.).
