I found this little gem on HQ Squadron 5th Canadian Armoured Division
    Army v England.jpg

Some very famous names that played for or went on to play England, Tommy Lawton who score 24 goals in 23 games for England, Stan Cullis player and later manager for Wolves, Joe Mercer to name just a few.

Wonderful find. As you say, some great names there. Frank Swift too plus the legend that is Denis Compton!

Strangely enough, with that side, the Army won, 3-1.

Yes I had forgotten those 2. Dennis Compton and his brother Leslie both played for Arsenal if I recall but only Dennis playing cricket for England.

    Cheers

Mr Brylcreem (other hair products are available).

I had it in my head that he had played both international cricket and football for England, but a quick check shows that his “England/FA” appearances were all during the war and, therefore, not classed as official matches.

    Sheldrake All over the place....

My father was a decent footballer as a teenager. In 1939 or 40 the games master at his school Bromley County Grammar School organised some exhibition matches with "Army" sides from the local command. He found himself marking Alex James or Arsenal . I asked him what he did and he said he tried to kick him at every opportunity - but the Army won 1-0. My dad did seem to impress someone as he had a letter from Jimmy Seed offering a place in Charlton Athletic's team. This my fathern said was the most useful document he ever had in the Army nas it kept him in sports teams and away from cookhouse fatigues.

    Mind you, 1-0 isn’t bad.
