ASHFORTH, Joseph W, Act/Able Seaman, P/JX 273635, (President III), MPK
CLARKE, Sidney, Act/Able Seaman, P/JX 273545, (President III), MPK
HAWLEY, Walter, Act/Able Seaman, P/JX 273546, (President III), DOW

Three RN gunners listed by CWGC as lost on this day. Were possibly killed after S.S. Warkworth sank following a collision (naval-history lists AB Hawley as being lost onboard 'Darkworth', a ship I have not been able to identify, so possibly a typo for Warkworth).

    Any ideas?

    Regards,

    Steve

Cargo ship Warkworth, 4,941grt, (Dalgleish SS Co. Ltd) sailed in ballast from Loch Ewe and joined the 26 ship Convoy ON-23, which departed Liverpool on the 4th October 1941. On the 10th October about 340 nautical miles South of Reykjavik, Iceland the Warkworth was involved in a collision with the British Merchant ship Selvistan sailing independently for Montreal. Badly damaged the Warkworth sank two days later during a gale in position 58’ 24N 22’ 28W. Nine crewmembers and four DEMS gunners drowned.
