Thanks A.M. Unfortunately, No joy there either! Agreed I looked myself but what you have to rememeber is they have a lot of stuff that isn't on the web site.....as I know a few people I get 'inside the shop' and they certainly had maps in April.....they also sell a booklet called 'With Nothing Bigger than a Bren Gun' about the defence of the schoolhouse at the road bridge and that isn't on the website either! I'm fairly confident they will have copies...I'm out there also in September so perhaps we can meet???
What are they planning to do to the Oosterbeek Museum, Phillip? I thought it was fantastic when I visited in 2003.
The Friends newsletter implied a few issues ago it would be 'modernised' but I had heard that this would not happen? Personally I would not like to see this happen, as it is an excellent museum in a unique location.
They will close it down for a couple of months for a rebuilding job, which is not to bad, but for example the very nice 75mm diorama will not be included in the new plans, and also a lot of the collection will not be on display anymore, it will be a new and "Modern" new museum. A lot of people including a lot of members of Friends of the Museum are against the plans, but it seems that it they plans are defintely.
Indeed Paul, it seems that more and more Museums, seem to loose reality and only going for the big money and al the modern stuff, the museum as it is now speaks for itself, and show how it was during the battle and what the stuff looked like.
I'm out there also in September so perhaps we can meet??? Yes, ok! I'm staying in Nijmegen for 4 nights and I have the evenings free, so why not!
I suspect that it will become like 'In Flanders Fields' and the Imperial War Museum North: a lot of sound and fury signifying not a great deal. How sad.
Just a couple of comments.... 52nd I realised last night I have two of the 1:25000 maps so if you pm me we can talk about you buying it! I'm not so sure that the Oosterbeek will be 'worse' after the modernisation.....the plans are to sort of have four five walk through diaramas, the first as though you were coming out of a glider on one of the landing zones and also one for Oosterbeek perimeter......most of this will be 'underground in an enlarged basement as the Hartenstein is a listed building......
Niall - let's hope you are right. Hartenstein is a magical place, and I always hope it will remain that way.
There was an officer also killed - Captain Thomas-Moy who was with 1st Airlanding Brigade. UPDATE: While doing (trying) a bit on research into the roll the 2nd Ox & Bucks played at the Hartenstein. I came a cross another Obli-Gobli - Pte R.A.F. Lansdowne, he was serving with the Airlanding Brigade HQ. It is believed he drowned trying to swim across the Rhine. Interestingly the CWGC and the Army Roll of Honour have him as an Obli-Gobli but in the ROH by Hey he is listed as serving with the 2nd South Staffs.
Knowing that we do in the Netherlands have no feeling about History and tradition (which you have in the UK, looking to all Regimental Museums). I am afraid that the people behind this transfrormation are not interested in the history of the Museum building itself nor the battle itself what so ever... I even can say do do not know very much about the battle itself ! (oeps)... With 'They' I do not mean some of the people who are working at the museum or volunteers, most of them are doing a magnificent job. But what about the Board ? For them its just somekind of a toy,... Acting like old men, sitting there doing nothing and are doing no any good whatsover. Curators:- They do seems to have some kind op papers to run a museum, but that it theoratical.... They do not give a shit.... (The only reason the museum is still running is because there are some good other people working at that place, volunteers, and some good Friends....) If the curator get sacked then he will move to a other museum, most likely not specific WW2 related....Problem is that the Board will also stay... so nothing will change at all.... It will only getting worse... By the way, same with the Soc. Of Friends.... appart from some of them, but most of them do not know a lot about the battle also... Its a shame ! And what do they do... Excursions to the Ardennes or Normandy instead of making a good battlefield tour about Arnhem... added:- About Curators... I only know one good guy in the past years : Wibo !

I'll check this out as I know the RoH is being updated in the view to doing another reprint and hopefully if everything checks out it will be corrected....I see his body wasn't washed up till 27th November 1944.....

With regard to RAF Lansdowne..emailed one of the editors with the comment that he appears to be listed in the wrong unit......awaiting news.....
A.M. Thanks, also regarding Pte Lansdowne it's thought he may of been the batman of Captain Moy-Thomas. Seeing as an updated version is on the cards, can you ask whether they could produce a pull out map as the one on the inside of the front and back covers isn't very practical because of the books spine.
I'll ask but for those with longer memories the first version had the two maps you mentioned loose.....
