I corresponded with Paul Vroemen some years ago about this incident as the Kuik brothers had assisted a neighbour of mine, from 1 Para, to escape from St Elisabeths Hospital. He had given them his service watch as a "thank you" and feared that the discovery of this watch in their possession may have, in some way, been the cause of their arrest and subsequent execution.

Paul wrote "I was a high schoolboy at that time. Hans and Bert Kuik, who were about 17 and 18 years old, were friends of my brother and lived not far from the house where we lived.
On the same day that they were executed by the Germans, they passed our house and had a drink at our place. Mt brother went with the boys to the Apeldoornseweg where they were stopped by a German patrol. All three had to walk to the Golf Links.
My brother was separated from the two boys who were both dressed in part of British Uniforms with a Red Cross sign pin their arms. My brother stayed together with some elderly people and they were released in the afternoon. The next day we heard that Hans and Bert had been executed."

I have a copy of a letter, dated 1946, which Mrs Kuik wrote to my neighbour in which she gave the details of her son's deaths.

Two exceptionally brave boys who assisted many soldiers to disappear from St Elisabeths hospital

Is that the same Cornelis Veldhuizen who is mentioned in "Zes dorpen in oorlog en verzet", a police officer from Renkum who was in hiding since 1943 because he helped jews???

Okay, could have been cause it says he took his revolver with him and went in hiding and joint a "Knokploeg". So he joined the resistance.

Dr Zwolle was recommended for the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct although I cannot find any record of the award being made.

On our trip in 2009 we had the good fortune to be shown around the Bridge area by David Buggenum and we visited Bakkerstraat. This is the plaque commemorating the Dutch civilians who were killed.

    All the best...........:)
