Arnhem: Hall, RE, possibly an officer?

    Gents,

While chatting to a book dealer the other day, he mentioned that his wife's great-uncle had dropped into Arnhem as a sapper on the second lift (4 Para Fd Sqn RE?). It was also mentioned that he 'finished up as a captain'.

Is there any mention of a Ken Hall in the literature beyond my meagre resources?

    Cheers,

    Andrew

Looks like he was 2nd Lieutenant K A Hall of 2 Troop I believe...appears to have made it back across the river......normal title of the unit is 4th Parachute Squadron RE....hoep this helps in some small way.....

    Thank you both.

I'd done quick search on the war diary on PegasusArchive but there was no mention of him.

I was led to believe he'd been dropped in, rather than flown in, so that's a useful snippet. He must have been part of the 'glider element' referred to in the WD.

Nothing much new to add to what the fellas have already mentioned I'm afraid. In the book "Basic Function" by John Sliz it says that 2nd Lt K A Hall was the CO of D Section, No.2 Troop (page 3) and was evacuated across the Rhine.

    All the best............ :)

Yes Lt Hall was with 4 Para Sqn RE.
One or two of the vets told me that he was not with the unit for very long and wondered what he had let himself in for when he suddenly found himself in thick of it with them.
I believe he left he unit soon after Arnhem and have found no references to him in the years after. Certainly never attended any of their re-unions

By way of a mild synchronicity, I've just been searching for information on Kenneth Walton Hall, a now sadly passed away resident of my hometown. In his effects were a number of references to his having been RAF during the war, including a glider regiment badge and amongst his old photos, a few of a visit to the Hartenstein Hotel, and an otherwise unremarkable house in what looks like Oosterbeek.

I wonder if the Ken Hall you're looking for is this fella.

    Hi,
Just spotted your post of last year. Did you find out any more about Lt Hall, his service number? Was he the same man?

re this post of last year.
Do you have any others of 4 Para Sqn RE listed in the glider element. I have no accurate record of those who went in by glider and am trying to out who was in which glider.

Hi Tom, if he went in Chalk number 722 then he dropped as a para. That chalk number flew in Dakotas from Spanhoe.
There were no Gliders with CNs in the 700s.
