I am going to Amsterdam early September and taking a trip to Arnham & Oosterbeek to see the new Museum extension which should be open before we visit, I went to Arnham many years ago while in the Army but never got to visit the Airbourne cemetery, I googled the area and noticed that the cemetery is quite some way from the centre of Oosterbeek, doe's anyone know how long it will take us to walk there as we are using the train & public transport during are brief visit also could I visit Lonsdale church in the same time? Medic, assuming that you are arriving into Arnhem Centraal on the train, if you walk down the ramp from the station the Bus station is on your right on the main road. If you get the Ossterbeek Train Station bus, it will drop you in walking distance to the Cemetery. When you get off the bus, crosss over the railway, and turn right into the access road to the cemetery (It is well signposted). After the cemetery, you can jump back on the bus and then get off at the Schoonard Hotel / MDS Crossraods, and then walk upto the Museum, again a couple of mins, or you can walk back down Stationweg, which was the edge of the perimeter and go back to the Schoonard that way. To get to the old church, Id suggest going right at the schoonard, and again trace the perimeter, past the Trafleberg Hotel, which was also a MDC during the battle. The walk to the church is downhill, but it is all uphill on the way back, so beware depending in what type of person is in your group. Phil
Thanks for that, yes I am planning to get off at Arnham Central Station at 10.00, my wife and myself are the only people visiting so I hope there are some shops she can visit We plan to make a day of it in Arnham and catch the train back to Amsterdam around 18.00 so I hope to get to see as much as possible. Regards Steve
Steve, If you're used to walking you can do all of that in about 5 hours including a quick look round the Museum...... Cemetery to the Museum to the Church.....are you ex-RAMC? There are several guide books you can get which will help you with these three locations....Waddy, Holt and Steer to name three in no particlaur order and my name is in two of them for helping.......

Hi AB, Yes I am Ex-RAMC, I have just ordered a copy of Stuart Mewsons book Arnham Doctor and would like to get a copy of Red Crosses & Red Berets by Neil Cherry, I have an interest in anything RAMC at Arnham so will be going to MDS crossroad, I would also like a copy of the painting by Dick Shephard "MDS Crossroads" so may be able to buy a copy while there.
Good on you Steve....In Arduis Fidelis..... A medicla walk of Oosterbeek should IMHO include MDS crosssroads (Schoonoord and Vreewijk) although the Schoonoord is compeltely different but inside you can see Reg Curtis's painting of the entrance hall of de Tafelberg as it was in September 1944...then de Tafelberg itself, Pietersberg house and then the ter Horst house (used as a RAP).....all covered in any of the previously mentioned guide books..... I think you will be able to get a copy of the Shepherd print for a reasonable price at the Museum shop...assuming it opens when the rest of the Museum reopens..... Good luck on trying to get a copy of Red Berets and Red Crosses....I understand not too easy to find.....
Hi AM and Medic You should know AM Medic points to AM guess who ??? he's on your post so.. I was lucky to get mine some time ago Red Berets and its signed too Interesting I took a photo of Pietersberg is this it AM ???
I'll have to track the author down and get mine signed...... Levin, my understading was the the museum was opening prior to the 20th, it is only the official re-opening that is taking place that day. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/members/englandphil.html

Tom, Yes, that is the Pietersberg...used as a dressing station by the remnants of 133 plus a few others......still very much the same (from the outside today).....don't think there is anyone left alive today who worked in there in 1944......
Hello Phil, As I understand it there will be an "unofficial" opening on the 18th for veterans and their families etc but the "public" opening isn't till the 20th as Levien says. The Museum actually opens tomorrow...the 28th August.....the official opening is on 20th when it will be closed unless an invited guest.....and before this causes an argument this came from my friend in Oosterbeek who works there...so he should know!
Completely off topic but there is talk of a small walk around the medical aspects of the battle of the perimeter going into (hopefully) Kate ter Horst house, de Tafelberg, Pietersberg Vreewijk etc in April 2010 after the SFAM AGM.....

Thanks for that AB, I did make an inquiry with the museums curator a few weeks ago and he emailed me back and ensured it would be opened by the 28th Phew. I am still hoping to get a copy of Red Crosses & Red Barets as I wish to find out more about the 181 Airlanding Field Ambulance.
You're right Niall. According to a local newspaper the museum will open its doors friday August 28th at 10.00h.

Hello AM, With regard to the Tafelberg, do you know if any of the interior of the original building remains? The last time I saw it (only from the outside sadly) it appeared that the front facade was the only bit left? All the best, Paul...........
The entrance hall of de Tafleberg is very much the same.....there is a section of the original floor kept as a mosiac and various photo boards.....I have some photos which I will post later.....
If I remember well, there was something about that floor in the Tafelberg. Bloodstains or something like that? Or was that just a rumour?
