I stumbled across this book the other day "Red Devil Rising" by Leonard Stone, ISBN 9781425132538 or 1425132537. Not sure how it "slipped under the radar" but anyhoo, another one to add to the list!!

    Paul,
The Stone book came out a few years ago and fairly confident it is a novel......there is also another novel called 'Coward at the bridge'.....it is about a bloke called Coward not a 'scared person'.......

    Hello mate,
Yes, Stone's book came out in 2008 and you're right it is a novel. I've been emailing him over the last few days and apparently he started researching the book in the 50's but only got around to actually finishing it a couple of years ago!! He says he interviewed, John Frost, John Waddy and Kate Ter Horst amongst others and also had access to Cornelius Ryans's files. If that's correct then it should be quite a good read.
The other one you mentioned "Coward At The Bridge" is a great read. I've posted a "review" of sorts on the "what are you reading......" thread.
    All the best............

What book/books best describe the training and education of the airborne boys?

I have read a few books about the HD and they all speak in unison of the superior drills and offensive spirit of the paras.

I was a Ranger back in the mid 90ies and a lot of input came from our friends in the UK. We had some lectures by two Nco's that had fought in the Falklands.

I recall that we trained hard on small unit tactics and created an esprit de corps built around the fact that there would be nobody to help us bar the man next to us. (we did a lot of long range recce)

I recognise some of this from the BBC series "the paras" (?), and I wonder how they did it in the early days.

All feedback would be most appreciated.

    yours.
