Here's another one for you then Tom ;)

My Great grandfather apparantly had 58616 as a service number. I have been unable to verify this so any pointers would be great. He was a pre war territiorial and ended up at Dunkirk.

if a post-1920 number, then is signifies initial enlistment in the RASC.

    Thanks Dave,
I seem to remember him mentioning driving trucks at Dunkirk so RASC sounds right i think. Does that number indicate a rough year of enlistment ?? He did serve in WW1 in the Tank Cops before being demobbed. Would that have any baring ??

your 8 digit numbering system is entirely correct as checking my own number - it's 8 digit's !!! in 1942 was 1437**** - just getting short sighted as I am due a cateract operation soon !
    Cheers

At least you've an excuse, Tom - I recently had a form returned to me where I was supposed to put my old service number on (8 digit), but i put a 7 digit number that was nothing like it but seemed right when I wrote it! Turned out to be my dad's old number which , for some reason ,must have been lying there in a dormant bit of memory and came forth when filling in the form!!!

It can do as they were issued consecutively. However, it'd help to know how many soldiers were in the RASC at the time of the number change in 1920 (which I don't!) and then work from there. As an educated guess (and roughly working off army intake numbers for the 1920's and 1930s), I'd say either between 1925 and 1930 or between 1930 and 1935. That is a completely rough estimation though and doesn't take into consideration enlistments into more popular units, etc, so may be way out!

His WW1 regimental number, unless he was still serving at the time of the number system change, would have no bearing on a number issued upon later re-enlistment.

Interesting......Anyone know at what point did it become just a numerical order (First come first served) and what number did they start at ?

    Geoff

I feel must tell you and others, of my experience this morning on testing out your admirable CWGC Search Engine.

    My Army number was 14300260.

I decided to enter only the first six digits, i.e. 143002 in the "number" field and see if any one who joined the Army near my time had been killed in WW2.

The search produced, amongst others a Trooper Fletcher, Reginald Water who died on the 12th of March 1945, is buried in The Reichswald Forest Cemetery and who's Army Number was 14300257.

Trooper Fletcher's number is just 3 digits lower than mine and he must have joined on the same day, 1st October 1942.

Truly a case of "There but for the Grace of G-d go I"

    Ron

    Ron,

I tried a search similar to yourelf and came up with a Private from the Kings Regiment (Liverpool), the Army number was quite close to my late fathers and he is buried in Phaleron War cemetery, near Athens.

He died on 22.5.46 and so I can only conclude that this soldier was wounded and later died as a result.

I read that the Cemetery site was chosen by the 4th Division as a burial ground for Commonwealth casualties of the Greek Civil war (Dec 1944-Bebruary 1945).

My late father once commented that he lost several friends in Greece, during this period.

This after surviving in Italy, fighting the Germans, must have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Have been given a number, 746881, for a relative who served during WW2 with above Regiment.

Would I be right in assuming that the zero after the seven has been omitted, or could this denote pre-war enlistment?

Want to apply for records, so any pointers welcome.
    Confused.

There's either a digit missing or he originally enlisted (pre-WW2) in the Royal Artillery and later transferred.

Dave thanks for those latest blocks.

Can you please tell me what the no and date quoted after mean? Wondering about an RAFVR pilot with no. 742137 and when roughly he would have been allocated this number. CWGC :: Casualty Details Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    D
