Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

    Hi guys,

    an uncle of mine served with the Argyles during WW2 and was killed in action .
    Casualty
    When the Second World War started LESSEL ALLAN joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Private, Service no: 7688781, where unfortunately on 6/3/1943 he was killed in action, southern Tunisia, aged 30. Where he is buried at the Enfidaville war cemetery. His home address was given as Kirriemuir, Angus.

    can any kind chap / chapess put a wee bit more meat on the bones of this story.

I should have mentioned this before - do not let his place of burial fool you, at Enfidaville there are also casualties from Medenine, Mareth and some who died of wounds received in Sicily in July 1943. Which is strange really, as Mareth is 200 miles south of Enfida, and Sfax war cemetery is in between the two,

    You'll find an account of the attack at Medenine by First Italian Army (previously Panzer Armee Armee Afrika) in my book 'None Bolder: The History of the 51st Highland Division in the Second World War' (Spellmount, March 2006). This should give you some of the information you require.

    On 6th March 1943, Rommel attacked the left flank of the 8th army at Meddnine, with 3 Panzer divisions, and was driven off by 8th army anti - tank artillery, losing 52 tanks. Infantry attacks later in the day received similar rough treatment,
