:lol::lol:... Well, I've just read it Di. And, just in case any one's forgotten... If it wasn't for Adam, along with the help of ALL the Mods, who put in the hours and the effort, this forum would have descended into the 12th level of Hell a long time ago.

We (as members) don't have access to the site data and forum usage stats, we can't see how certain threads affect the forum. As such we should have more faith in those that do. I'm pretty certain that decisions like this aren't taken lightly. And, with Adam always having the best interests of 'talk' and its members at heart, I trust the judgments made.

    Let's move on shall we....

'Course we did, at least twice a day. And got several different results, dunno if it was Vampires or counting with a 5 year-old that affected our answer though... Best parish church I've ever mooched around at the top.

Rich, I nearly called it 'The Oubliette' while setting it up ;).
It often crosses the mind to ban 100% of religion/politics and off-topic when something's spilling over, but I still think it'd cramp too much of the lighter side. The activities of a few affecting the forumage of the many.

Owen, you're a star as ever mate, a most succinct summation of the alternatives in your own fine style.

Move on indeed. We have WW2 to drone on about.

Adam, you could have called it 'The Black hole of Calcutta' and started a whole new contentious thread off !-_-

Is our old mate Owen getting a bit stressed ? An awful lot of 'effin' and blindin' there ! Can someone pop down to Swindon and buy him a pint ?

You're a bit psychic today - I removed that from the new forum's header, first phrase I initially put in the description...

Nah, he's always like that, he just felt like expressing himself openly today to make a solid point.
If anything it's a bit milder than the usual personal comms, as he left out his real favourite word.

A forum oubliette ? It sounds good to me.

I think that I made my views on 'the barracks' known some while back (and I now see that the first person to reply, saying 'keep it' has since been banned !)

'tis more trouble than it's worth chaps !
Might I refer the honourable gentleman to my post on the same subject:

Or, if you must, make it a restricted forum. By restricted, I mean just to those who actually want to opt in: OT forums tend to get a bit "cliquey" anyway and can become pretty much self-moderating. Plus there's the added advantage that webcrawlers don't have access, so anything you post there doesn't turn up on Google

To expand on the above: on one motorsport forum I'm a member of you need a minimum of 100 posts to join the O/T forum, on another a minimum of 30, but in both you need to make a formal request to the mods in order to gain access. One of those - on a board with something like 100000 members worldwide - has now been running successfully for nearly twelve years and, through experience, has evolved a set of rules which cover just about any possible eventuality: having just checked, I've found that in fact we have not had to introduce any new rules regarding anything to do with discipline since 2001. It works remarkably well and if any of the mods would like a copy of those rules to see how it can be done please PM me.

Certainly an interesting Idea Adam, I think it will either serve in letting people wear themselves out about any given subjects but at the same time it could fuel other debates in the rest of the forum as people have a tendency to not leave things alone even if one thread has nothing to do with another one.

No, you just took all the fun out of it Adam.
In much the same way as the experience of going out to the bars loses a little something once you've reached legal age. :)

    Hi Adam,

Stick to your guns. As one who well remembers the mess that the forum was in before you took it over, you deserve nothing but praise for your sterling work!

The other alternative is we have no moderation, you lot can say what the fuck you like & watch the forum descend into a cesspit of bile & hatred , spammers, links to porn sites, members who can't log on etc etc cos to be honest I'm fucking pissed off with it all.

You've just described the Canadian Parliament!
