As someone who has devoted a fair amount of time joining new forums, it occurred to me that a few words on the topic of "How to succeed in establishing yourself on a new forum" would not go amiss.

The list is short, perhaps others would care to add their own ideas ?

    • Your first posting should be just a simple introduction, setting out how you found the forum and what you hope to gain by being a member. It should also give a few basic details about yourself such as age & location.
    • Your next step is to wait for a day or so to see if you have received any welcome messages from other forum members and, if this has occurred, a brief “Thanks for that” acknowledgement would be considered appropriate.
    • Start monitoring the site on a daily basis looking for postings that are of interest to you or where you consider you may have something to say that might interest others.
    • Don’t feel obliged to add a comment to every thread but stick to topics that are in your area of interest or expertise.
    • Start to recognise the different member's style of writing and, if you find that you have much in common with a particular member, consider asking them to be your “friend” (Don’t be offended if they chose not to “accept”, everyone has their own reasons for saying no thanks)
    • Avoid being caustic when making comments on what others have written, at the end of the day you and others are looking to have a pleasant time on the internet.
Have a long and pleasant stay here :)

I would like to add that it is very difficult to read context into a post, although written in jest or sarcasm, that is not always possible to read so can be taken in the wrong way, re-reading a post before pressing " post reply " often makes you aware of an issue you weren't aware of whilst typing.

I would suggest posting in a clear and open manner with correct punctuation etc, there is nothing more annoying than reading 10 lines of text without a comma, full stop etc..

Being an admin on another forum I can state quite categorically that it gets rather frustrating when someone asks a question that has been asked, and answered, 4352 times before, so please use the search function... from experience this is far from infallible however it can frequently provide the information required.

Don't take negative or opposing posts personally, there are far more important things to get annoyed about than some post on an internet forum, shrug it off and get on with enjoying the forum and company of like minded members.
