Just wanted to say that there seems to be a question mark over my Granda's participation in Longcloth. There is no doubt about Operation Thursday but until I can speak to him directly on discharge from hospital I most likely will retract part of my thread in the future. How it has helped speaking with another who is knowledgeable and able to fill in blanks.
Hi MacKenzie14, I am the grandson of an Operation Longcloth Chindit, who sadly did not return from Burma and who perished as a prisoner of war inside Rangoon Jail. I started to research my grandfather's WW2 journey about 12 years ago and my adventure led me to publish a website about the men of the first Wingate expedition, which came out in 2011. The website can be seen here: Chindit Chasing, Operation Longcloth 1943 Hope that helps out. Steve
Look forward to taking a look at your website. I am sorry to read that you say your Granda perished as a prisoner in Rangoon Jail. From what I have learnt our Chindit heroes were treated savagely so my condolences to you and your family. I am very lucky & blessed to have my Granda in my life today when others like yourself had that privilege taken away. I feel almost guilty the more I read on this forum. I need to do more research however as I was under the impression that my Granda had been party to both Longcloth & Thursday but now am not so sure. I will keep you posted once I get a real opportunity to explore more conversation(Granda is presently in hospital and it's not the easiest of places to talk privately) B43 - Bamboo43 Am usually pretty observant! Thanks Steve Sharon
Did you see the recent documentary on Sky called "Wingate & the Chindits" that was aired on the 27th February 2020? The full hour was about operation Longcloth. I thought the series might have continued with operation Thursday but it moved on to other war stories instead.
Hi Sharon, I don’t have Sky Tv sadly, but that sounds as though it was part of the Narrow Escapes of WW2 series. I have seen this before and enjoyed it a lot. My Nan did not speak much about granddad and never remarried, so it was not until I began my research that we realised what had happened to him. Let me know if you think I can help you in any way.
