We have this picture in our family album of a distant relative and are trying to find out a bit more. Can anybody identify the uniform, please? We are assuming it is WWII era and has a military connection. The words on the shoulder say '2nd North..'
    Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry I cannot help you, but I am sure that one or more of our members will know the answer and get back to you.

Anymore background information that may be of help?

Hi David and welcome to the forum.

Could your lady be an ARP warden?

    Regards
    Peter

Having looked a second time, maybe not.:)

Thanks. No, we have no other background information although we think perhaps her branch of the family emigrated. Could it be US, Australian?

It certainly does have an Australian look to the way the hat brim is turned up.

I wonder if any of our Australian members can help.

The Australian Army Nursing Service had three uniforms during the War, none of which included a white tie. After the war the same service was the Royal Australian Nursing Corps, which did have a white tie, however it also had a big id patch on the left upper arm and a Waratah (A flower) patch (red on white), but the rest of the uniform doesn't quite fit. Although she does appear to be wearing a white armband, but it could be a Waratah patch.

In the photo there's some form of insignia on the tie, any chance of a higher resolution picture?

Well, the Baden Powell picture is pretty close. Here's a close-up of the stars and the tie pin, although the quality isn't good.
    Thanks again

This one's even closer - it's the Queen Mum in Girl Guide garb! The military link is fading...

It looks to be a good bet that it is a Guide leaders uniform.
The tie pin badges look a similar shape although I cannot get good definition when zooming in.

    Girl Guides, Stone, Staffordshire. 1920 - 1930.

    The hats seem similar.

No doubt in my mind. It matches one of my mother, taken in 1908, when she was a Girl Guide Leader, but I passed it to my daughter so can't scan it.

    Davidicus,

It looks like a satisfactory conclusion to the mystery.

I showed the photo to a female reenacting chum and she said girl guides judging from the hat.
