A friend has asked me to find info on their grandad but all they have is his WW2 medals. They think he may have served on HMS Shropshire and I was wondering if there is a crew list anywhere please.

his name was Clifford Sellers and he was born 22/08/1911 and lived in the Wakefield area of West Yorks.

    thanks for looking

HMS Shropshire (83) of the Royal Navy - British Heavy cruiser of the London class - Allied Warships of WWII - uboat.net
On 8 September 1942 her transfer to the Royal Australian Navy was announced, as a replacement for HMAS Canberra. She was recalled from the South Atlantic and paid off at Chatham Dockyard in December 1942 to refit for Australian service.

Hi I have attached a image of his medals thanks. They are to send off the documents to the navy but only have his name and DOB it may take some time. Was just wondering if anybody knew a crew list etc that may help with his rank and service number.

Clive - That's duff information for an RN/RM Record of Service Application.

Unlike Army or RAF forms there are no sections marked optional.

The statement at the top of the form is "essential that you complete this form as fully and accurately as possible"

You can just complete the three sections you list but it is up to Disclosures as to if they action it.

RN records are catalogued differently from the other services and include National Insurance Number as a primary identifier so this is requested along with :

    Surname:
    Full Forenames:
    Official Service Number:
    National Insurance Number:
Service Career (for example; dates of joining or leaving):
    Date and Place of Birth:

To answer your question - Don't waste your time looking for a crew list for RN ships. You can't obtain them on or offline due to the way the RN accounted for their crews. The best way to find the information you need is to obtain his service records as already stated.

    Regards
    Hugh

    Hi
My grandad was called Clifford Sellers, from Wakefield , same date of birth. He also served on HMS Shropshire, and I have some of his medals. Weird!! Never been on this site before so only just seen this. I don't know how far you got with your enquires, but I'm in the process of requesting his records. Intriguing.
